The Freedom Vows: Right Action Guidelines

There are ten vows, referred to as the Ten Non-Virtues or The Freedom Vows. They are referred to as “Freedom Vows” because the Buddha taught how to achieve a state of peace in life in the most expeditious way—in other words, how to make every day better. What works? What will you do? What will work for most everyone that, if practiced, will free them from illusion, attachment, and the resulting dissatisfaction?

The ten vows are grouped by the three gateways (body, speech, and mind). Of the ten, three are related to the body, three are related to the mind, and four are related to speech. They are:

Of the body

Refrain from taking life or killing

Refrain from taking things that don’t belong to you or weren’t freely given to you, or stealing

Refrain from sexual misconduct
